Bombshell Federal Probe Alleges Discrimination Against Niwot High School Girls Basketball Team
The allegations assert that Niwot High School did not ensure equitable scheduling, coaching opportunities, and failed to address concerns of bullying and intimidation by Head Coach Todd Trobaugh.
Niwot High School in Niwot, Colorado is currently under a significant federal investigation for alleged Title IX violations involving the girls basketball program during the 2023-24 season. Launched by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), the probe scrutinizes specific aspects of the program that reportedly infringed upon the civil rights of players.
The detailed allegations, initiated on June 11th, 2024, claim that the school neglected equitable game scheduling and team opportunities, including an awards banquet exclusively held for boys. Additionally, there were alleged failures in providing fair coaching opportunities and assigning coaches. The allegations also assert that concerns regarding Head Coach Todd Trobaugh's behavior were raised to the district but were allegedly disregarded or inadequately addressed.
The complaint alleges that Coach Trobaugh bullied and intimidated members of the girls basketball program throughout the season. Allegedly, when players and parents raised complaints, the district did not respond effectively. The complaint triggering the probe outlines alleged systematic discrimination against the Niwot girls basketball team.
In their communication with the district, federal investigators are requesting comprehensive records regarding all Niwot coaches, including contracts, salaries, and qualifications. The investigation also seeks all correspondence related to allegations of bullying and intimidation, the qualifications of the head girls basketball coach, investigation details, remedial actions, and disciplinary records associated with the allegations.
The district is required to provide the requested records to federal investigators by June 26th, 2024. OCR, part of the U.S. Department of Education, acts as an impartial investigative body enforcing federal civil rights laws in schools. It functions neutrally in gathering facts to determine outcomes, without bias toward either the complainant or the district. IX Initiative will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
